Cryptography Mailets

Mailets which encode, decode, sign and verify mail plus cryptology utilities.

S/MIME Mailets

S/MIME provides cryptographic services for MIME messages. These services include public key digital signature and encryption. Authentication is certificate based and so uses a hierarchical trust model.

SMIME is standardised by the IEFT .

James provides:

  • SMIMECheckSignature Verifies the S/MIME signature of a message. The s/mime signing ensure that the private key owner is the real sender of the message.
  • SMIMEDecrypt Decrypts a S/MIME encrypted message.
  • SMIMESign Puts a server-side SMIME signature on a message.

The U.S. Government Department of Commerce, Bureau of Industry and Security (BIS), has classified this software as Export Commodity Control Number (ECCN) 5D002.C.1, which includes information security software using or performing cryptographic functions with asymmetric algorithms. The form and manner of this Apache Software Foundation distribution makes it eligible for export under the License Exception ENC Technology Software Unrestricted (TSU) exception (see the BIS Export Administration Regulations, Section 740.13) for both object code and source code.
